Naughty Cat – Book

A Story in Auslan about a Naughty Cat!

The story was “written” in Auslan, and composed in a unique format designed to make Auslan the focus language in storytelling and reading, rather than English.

It encourages the reader to tell the Naughty Cat story through depicting signs weaved around particular handshapes, guided by the pictures in the book.  This enables a much richer and more playful language development experience for the little people the story is aimed at, equivalent to the way rhyme or alliteration are used to play with language in traditional spoken children’s stories.

The cute story and innovative design was composed by Darlene Thornton, who has dreamed of this kind of book for many years.  It has been lovingly illustrated by the gifted Tasmanian artist Emma Kendall, who learnt so much about Auslan on the job.

Available in a sturdy and bright board-book edition, ideally sized for small hands to hold.
